Oxyuriasis: Anal Itching

Which is?

is an inflammation caused by the worm Oxyurus vermicularis (or Enterobius vermicularis) that lodges in the large intestine. Inflammation means a process of reaction to an irritant that strikes a living being.

It is characterized by edema (swelling), hyperemia (redness), hyperesthesia (increased pain sensitivity) and increased local temperature eventually accompanied by functional decrease and depending on the affected site can pass without noticing the process.

How do you get it?

Except for anal itching and occasional episodes of diarrhea most people feel nothing. Severe infestations can cause vomiting, frequent diarrhea including excess fat in stools, constant anal itching, insomnia. Irritability, weight loss, reaching malnutrition.

How is the diagnosis made?

The diagnosis can be evidenced by the visualization of stool worms (rare), by searching for eggs in the parasitological examination of stools and most commonly by searching for eggs in the perianal and anal region through anal scraping (swab) or tape. Prevention

Hygiene in a systematic way, hands, food, animals, clothes, bedding, toys is effective in prevention. Use of bleach (1/3 dilution) is most effective for cleaning objects that are not attacked by chlorine.
