Glossary - Letter R

Radicle - Part of the vegetable embryo that forms the root. This is usually the first part to germinate in the seed.

Root - Vegetable organ derived from the embryo radidula. Its main functions are absorption, fixation, stabilization and nutrient reserve.

Axial Root - Typical root of dicotyledons that will have a major axis from which the secondary roots depart. Also known as pivoting root.

Fascicated Root - Typical monocotyledonous root, where there is no major axis. The lateral branches start from the same place. Also known as a hair root.

Rickets - A disease that is characterized by poor bone and tooth formation, usually due to a lack of vitamin D that aids in the absorption and fixation of calcium salts.

Recessive - Recessive gene. One who only manifests in homozygosis.

Endoplasmic Reticulum - Membrane canaliculus system, present in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells, with the function of substance transport; may have smooth membranes (smooth reticulum) or with attached ribosomes (rough reticulum or ergastoplasma). In this second case it is also responsible for protein synthesis.

Waste - materials or material remains which the owner or producer no longer considers to be of sufficient value to retain them Some types of waste are considered highly hazardous and require special care regarding collection, transportation and disposal, as they present substantial hazard or potential to human health and living organisms.

Retidoma - Or bark. It is formed by the over position of the epidermis and the super, two lining plant tissues that together are known as bark.

Rhizobium - A genus of bacteria that lives in mutualistic association with legume roots. Ribose Sugar with five carbon atoms in the RNA component (pentose) molecule.

Ribosomes - Cytoplasmic granule consisting of RNA and proteins present in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells; is responsible for protein synthesis (see also Nucleolus)

Rickets - Cellular, parasitic, viral agent of the Monera kingdom.

Rhizopods - Class of protozoa that move by pseudopods.

RNA - ribonucleic acid; nucleic acid type; It has a single chain filamentous molecule, ribose, phosphate and nitrogenous bases adenine, guanine, cytosine and uracil.
